Quick answer

Planet Fitness's Customer Service FAQ lists three ways to end a membership:

  • send written notice by mail to your home club
  • go to your home club in person
  • use the online member portal

To stop your next monthly charge, PF's FAQ says the club must receive your request at least 8 days before your next billing date. The annual fee works the same way: the club must receive your request at least 8 days before the annual fee date. If you've moved away and can't get to the club, the mailed letter below is one of PF's listed methods.

Planet Fitness says some policies vary by location. Check with your home club.

Steps to cancel by mail

  1. Find your billing dates. PF says you can find them "by logging into your member portal at planetfitness.com or on your membership agreement." Note both your next billing date and your annual fee date.
  2. Work out your "must receive by" date: count back 8 days from whichever date comes next (PF's 8-day rule). Example: if your next billing date is the 17th, the club needs your letter by the 9th. Our suggestion: mail transit time varies, so send it well before that date.
  3. Check for a minimum term. PF says that if your membership has a minimum term and you end it early, "a $58 buyout fee is required."
  4. Fill in the printable letter below and address it to your home club. The FAQ says written notice goes "via mail to your home club."
  5. Keep proof. Our suggestion: keep a copy of the signed letter, and mail it yourself with USPS Certified Mail and Return Receipt so you have proof it arrived. This isn't a Planet Fitness requirement or legal advice.
  6. Watch your account. Our suggestion: after the "must receive by" date, check your member portal or bank statement around the next billing date.

Printable letter (fill in the brackets)

[Your full name] [Your current mailing address] [Your phone or email, optional] [Date] Planet Fitness, [Home club name] [Home club street address] [City, State ZIP] Re: Request to end my membership, member [Club Pass / member number, if you have it] To the [Home club name] team, I am requesting to end my Planet Fitness membership at this club. Please stop all future billing, including monthly dues and the annual fee. Name on the membership: [Full name] Member number or other identifier (optional): [ ] Next billing date (from my member portal or agreement): [date] Please send written confirmation that my membership has ended, and the date it ended, to [email or mailing address]. Sincerely, [Signature] [Printed name]

Why this wording: it uses PF's own phrase ("requesting to end your membership"), names the home club, and asks for written confirmation. It makes no legal claims. Edit it to fit your situation.

Asking for a refund / billing questions

  • PF's FAQ says: "If your home club is open, your best source of billing or membership information is to contact them directly. If your home club is closed, please contact our member services department."
  • Our suggestion: if you're charged after the club received your notice on time, show the club your dated copy and delivery record, and your bank if needed.
  • PF's FAQ doesn't say whether it refunds a charge made after an on-time cancellation.
